If you’re like me, then you’re handsome, famous, and play World of Warcraft. If you’re not like me, then you hate spreadsheets. Don’t worry, I’m here to help you. Now, let’s take a stroll to the forbidden, seedy land of Microsoft Excel and Web Query Files.

The Undermine Journal (UJ) is a great resource for data mining market prices and the economy in World of Warcraft. You can search for an item at a time, or use their canned reports to find various types of deals. One of the many hidden gems UJ has to offer is the availability of market data as a data source. I had been using the CSV format of their market price data, but recently switched to IQY.

IQY is a Web Query File that is nothing more than a text file that includes a data source address for a Web Service or API. The IQY file is then recognized by Microsoft Excel and data returned from the service call is displayed in a worksheet.

Here’s how to generate an IQY file for Excel:

  1. Register an account on The Undermine Journal. You will not have access to the IQY data source unless you are logged in
  2. On the User Controls page, find the “Market Data XML and CSV” section, choose a realm, and click on “Excel Data Source” to access your IQY file
  3. Save and open the IQY file in Excel

Now that you have your data, you can start mining the market locally. While you could certainly use this to simply look up item values for buying and selling, this data is extremely useful for crafting. In my next post, I’ll describe how this process applies to my crafting of Darkmoon Faire cards, and formulas you can use to query the data.

Hunters have an abundance of loot to choose from while preparing for end-game raiding. With Mists of Pandaria, Hunters once again are forced to make some tough decisions.

For Gloves, Marksman Hunters will be looking at auctioneers and Leatherworkers for assistance. The BoE, crafted pair of Raven Lord’s Gloves will be a Marksman Hunter’s best-in-slot. The only downside is the Leatherworking pattern comes from Mogu’shan Vaults. So, as a Hunter, you can check the auction house for this item. Good luck to you with that as there are very few available if at all, and prices will be outrageous until more players enter MV.

In the meantime, start working on your August Celestials reputation. A cool 1,750 Valor points will grant you access to the Sentinel Commander’s Gauntlets. Quests from the Dread Wastes will be kind to Hunters as well. The level 89 Wind-Reaver Handwraps will be your best option as you enter heroics and embark on the reputation grind. You’ll get a decent break from Shado-Pan, who will offer you the level 90 Brushcutter’s Gloves at only Honored status.

Pet Battles are fun. I can’t explain it. You can’t explain it. It’s fine, let’s move on. If you are into battling pets, especially those out in the wild, you’ll want to install the addon Battle Pet – Quality Notifier for World of Warcraft. Here is the official description of this addon from Curse:

Simply displays some information about the wild pet in your chat window.

Enough said, right? When you’re out flying around in the old world taking screenshots of your various transmog gear and how it looks in different light and environments, you can… What’s that? You don’t… fly around and… Yeah, I know, who would do that.

If you are out gearing up for your Mists of Pandaria raid, and you come across a pet that you might consider battling when nobody is looking, this addon will display the pet quality in your chat window. It will also tell you whether or not you own the pet, so you can consider whether or not you want to capture it.

As simple and awesome as this addon is, it will become obsolete with patch 5.1. Blizzard has already announced that tooltips will be added to the game that display additional information about battle pets out in the wild, while engaged in battle, and when viewing your pet journal. Until the patch drops, enjoy this enhancement to your battle pet UI.

Remember the Nightslayer Shoulder Pads? The “boob shoulders?” Yeah. Well, Rogue fashion has come along way since then. Take Mists of Pandaria, for example, and the Silentleaf Armor. Much cooler, right? I mean it looks like you have knives on your gear, making you ready to slice and dice anyone that decides to go for a ride on your shoulders.

If you want to get your Rogue’s shoulder slot taken care of for raiding, you’re going to want to start working on your Golden Lotus faction. The good news is, Wowhead has a very nice guide to gaining reputation with this faction. Your focus will be achieving revered status and spending 1,750 Valor Points on the Imperion Spaulders. These will serve as your pre-raid best-in-slot item and show your fellow raiders that you mean business.

For a new Rogue entering your mid-80s, you may want to farm the auction house for the Mantle of Bestial Force. This bind-on-equip item only requires level 81, but the stats on it will serve you well when you reforge Mastery into Expertise. When you hit the Dread Wastes and ding 89, pick up the Ghost Fox Spaulders and use them while running heroics. This rare item is a reward from a quest chain that begins with Mazu’s Breath from Deck Boss Arie.

The official PTR notes for the upcoming World of Warcraft patch 5.1 have been posted by Blizzard. I commented on patch 5.1’s changes in a previous post, but wanted to highlight a few other announcements now that we have confirmed details.

Scenarios

In a semi-hidden announcement, there will be a “Black Temple” Scenario. This is one of the things that I have wanted in the game for so long: the ability to experience raid content with a smaller group. I spent weeks farming old world raids and dungeons before my hiatus. I was completing tier sets left and right, getting achievements, and valuable loot for folks leveling up or stashing away Transmog gear.

There are no written details yet about this particular Scenario, but an image was put up on MMO Champion, along with other Scenario maps.

General

Two new factions will be added for the Pandaren Campaign: “Operation: Shieldwall” for Alliance and “Dominance Offensive” for Horde. Players will be able to slay opposing faction NPCs to earn commissions that will upgrade their own faction’s base. This reminds me a lot of Halaa in Nagrand, which became abandoned fairly early on during The Burning Crusade.

Pet Battles

Battle Stones will be introduced to the game. These are bind-on-equip tokens that can be used to upgrade the quality of pets by individual pet or pet class. Battle Stones will be obtainable as a “drop” from a pet battle and from completing quests from pet trainers.

The in-game Pet Journal also gets a decent overhaul, allowing for the viewing of pet rarity level, the addition of advanced filtering options, and the ability to show where various pets are from. For example, you’ll be able to filter by a particular zone, and view all the pets you have and, more importantly, don’t have.

A couple of other interesting changes regarding pets and the Darkmoon Faire were announced. Pet Battle daily quests will be added to the Dark Moon Faire, rewarding players with a new pet, the Darkmoon Eye. Additionally, two new battle pets will be added to Darkmoon Island and can be captured and added to your Pet Journal.

Brawler’s Guild

More details about this super secret, underground brawling society have been revealed. Kind of. What we know is you will be able to fight NPCs in some way in some kind of PvE environment. To me, this is Pet Battles for folks that don’t want to play Pet Battles, or admit that they play and enjoy Pet Battles. As with most features in the game, rewards and achievements will be yours as you “level up” through the Brawler’s Guild. Most importantly, “If this is your first night at Brawler’s Guild, you have to fight.”

The most critical piece in a Holy Priest’s gear is the belt. Why? Because the belt holds up the Priest’s pants or skirt. Sometimes, Priests wear robes. In this case, the belt becomes more of an accessory, but you really can’t wear a robe without a belt. It would just look silly.

As you level your Holy Priest through the Mists of Pandaria, get a jump start on your foes by farming the auction house for the Repression Belt. This is a level 85 bind-on-equip item that will take you all the way to at least 87 if not 90. Yes, I know it has Hit, but you’re going to reforge it to Spirit because you’re a min-maxing fool.

Your pre-raid, best-in-slot belt (Klaxxi Lash of the Seeker) is going to come from your friends, The Klaxxi. If you’ve grown tired of them, then you’ll want to run yourself some Stormstout Brewery on Heroic mode for the Fermenting Belt.

Don’t deny yourself some PvP gear either! You know you’re a Tailor itching to make yourself some gear, so put your hands together and produce the Contender’s Satin Belt as soon as you hit 90. This will show those puggers that you mean business by wearing a PvP item in a heroic dungeon. Explain to them that you understand that it’s generally meant for PvP, but you’ve reforged the Mastery to Haste, and are taking advantage of the Intellect and Spirit stats on the item. Make it quick, though, before they kick you from the group.
